Additional Tax Information for Arlington County, Virginia

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

As a follow up to a previous article referencing tax rates across counties in the DC metropolitan area, I wanted to elaborate on property taxes in Arlington County.

As previously stated, the tax rate for Arlington County is .838 (base rate) and totals .848 (including sanitation). Remember that these numbers represent the rate per $100 of assessed value on the property, so to calculate the taxes owed, you would divide the assessed value by $100 and then multiply by the tax rate.

Arlington, like many counties, also has additional tax rates in specific areas. This is called a special assessment, and is simply a special tax that government can assess against real estate parcels for certain public projects. Below we have listed the known areas that have special assessments in Arlington, and what those rates are:

.144 – 2nd Road North

.082 – Rosslyn

.043 – Crystal City

.052 – Chain Bridge

It should also be noted that municipalities meet every year and re-evaluate the tax rates, often times changing them. In Arlington, these changes occur every April. Below is a chart showing tax rates dating back to 2004:

.818 – 2007

.818 – 2006

.878 – 2005

.958 – 2004

You’ll note that taxes don’t always go up (isn’t that a relief) and rates should correspond to specific needs of the county depending on the year.
