Sandy Spring community was founded by Quakers who arrived in the early 1700s searching for land where they could grow tobacco and corn. They built their meeting house in 1817 near a fresh-water spring which gave its name to the community. A Quaker school, Sandy Spring Friends School, is still located in the area.
